Safe & Effective Work with Young People
Essential knowledge and skills for Fire and Rescue staff
New challenges for Fire and Rescue Services
Fire and Rescue Services have developed a national Strategy for Children and Young People 2006-2010 with a key aim to ensure that Fire and Rescue Service staff working with children and young people are effective and professional.
To respond to these challenges, Fire fighters and Fire and Rescue Service personnel working with young people need to know how to work safely and effectively in order to meet the requirements of legislation and best practice, specifically:
- Following the Children Act 2004 and the introduction of Every Child Matters all fire and rescue staff will need to have an understanding of best practice in their work with young people to ensure safe and effective work
- Fire and Rescue personnel who have more substantial contact with 13-19 year olds as part of their wider role in promoting community safety need to have a greater level of knowledge and understanding.
Meeting the Need
FPM Training, in partnership with the National Youth Agency, has collaborated with the Fire Service College to develop a new programmes "Safe and Effective Working with Young People", which is developed in two parts.
1. Safeguarding Children and Young People is an e-learning module designed to ensure all Fire and Rescue staff are provided with relevant information in a simple, straightforward way to enable them to comply with current safeguarding policies and procedures with regard to young people. The programme draws on current legislation and best practice in this field. It has been designed in consultation with staff from two Fire and Rescue Services to ensure it meets their needs.

2. Effective Work with Young People is a 2 day residential programme to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to work safely and effectively with young people. The programme enables services to fully implement the Fire and Rescue Service’s Strategy for Children and Young People 2006-10 and comply with the Children Act 2004 and Every Child Matters.
